Amy McLean! ![]()
Gulf Coast Donkey and Mule Association is proud to announce its 2010 Scholarship award recipient,
Amy McLean. Amy is originally from Georgia where she grew up on her family’s mule and donkey farm. She was first introduced to the neighbor’s guard donkey, PJ, at an early age of 8 months. She claims she’s was imprinted by longears at birth! Amy received her undergraduate and Master’s degree from the University of Georgia and her PhD from Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI. Amy’s dissertation research focused on improving donkey welfare through enhanced training, management and education in Mali, West Africa. In Mali, Amy worked closely with SPANA an organization that provides free veterinary care for donkeys. She believes that increasing the well being of donkeys in Mali, one of the 10th poorest countries in the world, helps increase the well being of those who they work for. During her PhD she also worked closely with Crossroad’s Donkey Rescue in Clare, MI. Amy is also involved in showing mules and currently owns two mules that are no strangers to the show ring, W.C. He’s a Playboy and her new mule Wild Bill. She is a professor and equine specialist at the University of Wyoming, Laramie, WY. Other interesting facts include, she has a Jack Russell named Marshmellow who travels to many of the shows with her and she likes iced mochas, ice cream, food in general, warm weather, and Texas! She comes to Texas as often as possible to ride and show Bill and see her “dear friends” who she really considers to be her “Texas Family.” |
