PURPOSE:   The Gulf Coast Donkey and Mule Association is pleased to announce its annual scholarship program designed to show support for the educational needs of members and their families. Funds are available for any educational event, which may enhance the recipient's career or participation in the activities of the Club, as well as for graduating high school seniors. Since the goal of the Scholarship Program is to show Club support, the funded amount may be divided among applicants with needs and credentials deemed equal by the Scholarship Committee.

EVALUATION:  The application specifies required supporting materials which will be evaluated first on participation in GCDMA Club events, then on other activities, on completeness of application and finally on the positive effect which the award may have for the recipient.

RULES:

1.  Initial Funded Amount:  $500.00

A minimum of one Club event per year will be designated to fund this program for the future.

2.  Scholarship Program will be renewable annually by a majority vote of the Club members.

3.  The Club may establish it’s own educational event and take applications for participation in that event.

4.  Scholarship Program will be open to any member or member family, child (child defined as dependent using IRS rules - "full time student until age 24") or adult:

a. Who has been a paid member for more than one calendar year
prior to the current year.

b. Whose membership for the current year was paid by March 15th of the current year.

c. Who has participated in Club functions during both the prior and the current year

(Participation=attended Club meetings, served as a volunteer worker in club functions, showed in sanctioned Club shows)

5. A Scholarship Committee of 5 impartial Club member volunteers will make the final decisions.

6. Decisions of the Scholarship Committee will be based on the following requirements:

a. Appropriateness, value and quality of the proposed educational event

b. Prior participation in the Club (Note: Overall emphasis for this award is on Club involvement.)

c. Participation in other equine activities

d. Participation in community service of any type

e. Scholastic record (if relevant and if submitted--not required)

f. Need of the individual

7. Application must be submitted in handwriting by the person who will receive the scholarship. Application must be accompanied by supporting documentation (i.e. copy of course description/fees or flyer from event) including highlighted name and address information for creation and mailing of the check.

8. All applications must be submitted between March 1st and March 15th of the applicable year to be accepted. (Postmark date)

9. In most situations, the award money will be made directly to the educational institution. If the award is requested to be made directly to the recipient, the Club Treasurer must receive a letter stating the circumstances and requesting approval prior to expenditure. If approved, fully dated and descriptive receipts are required prior to payment of award.

10. Applications must be for an education/event that occurs or begins in the same year application is made. An awarded amount will be held by GCDMA during the current fiscal year, and if not used during that time, will be forfeited.

11. Application can be made once annually as often as there is a qualifying event or ongoing education.  The club is proud to support efforts toward greater education and improved skills.
