If you haven't been to a GCDMA ASS Class, you are missing out on something really special! This event is designed with our members in mind for the purpose of providing the most current information on veterinarian care, breeding practices, farm care and training that can be found in the mule and donkey world today. This year Gulf Coast went all out in making sure a variety of topics were presented by top professionals.

Starting with Dr. Nora Matthews, DMS Diplomat ACVA, we learned a great deal about the differences between horses and donkey/mules using anesthesia and other drugs. Many donkey/mule owners have already become aware that there is much difference in the administration of drugs between the breeds, but this was the most enlightening clinic on the subject. One very useful tool introduced to us by Dr. Matthews is the educational website at www.avis.org. She explained that this is a website where many articles are stored, and much information is available to veterinarians and laymen on a rainbow of topics concerning donkeys and mules. It is an excellent source for your veterinarian.

Sheila Teaque works at the TAMU College of Veterinary Medicine in the area of Reproduction. She covered the subject thoroughly, and was particularly helpful in the area of answering questions from attendees. Sheila works with top veterinarians in the practice of Equine reproduction, and her presentation was exceptional.

After a super lunch of Western Spaghetti, salad and desert, we enjoyed a special recognition for Walter Nunn, 2007 Inductee into the Bishop Mule Days Hall of Fame. Those of us who have watched Walter show over the years know how well deserved this honor is for him. A big Congratulations to Walter Nunn!

Dr. Tex Taylor, DVM is an extremely well known veterinarian and teacher, but not everyone knows that he is also an expert trainer and farrier. His presentation on donkey feet covered the subject from the ground up…no pun intended. There are a lot of differences between donkeys and horses, and not every farrier is familiar with them. We all gained a wealth of knowledge in this area.

Amy McLean, Animal Science Department Michigan State University gave an excellent presentation on the differences between the mule and the hinny. She also gave a very entertaining and educational presentation on donkeys used in many parts of the world, and the conditions in which they live and work. The contrast between those countries and ours, where people are dependant on these animals for their very existence was fascinating.

Last, but not least, Jeannie Richards presented a clinic on the handling and training of miniature donkeys for Halter and Showmanship. Due to the large number of large animal owners, she was sure to include training techniques that work for both, but the hands-on portion was filled with folks who plan to get out there and give it a try with the minis.

We really want to encourage our membership to take advantage of the Donkey and Mule ASS Class the next time we host this event. The speakers at this event are available to us through the association of our officers with Texas A&M, and other members, and the wealth of information is truly unparalleled. Thanks to all those who attended. See you all next time!
